Los Angeles seminar May 23rd

Los Angeles seminar May23rd

This is the last class of this month.

1) See everyone holding their hands up? No, this is not the question an answer session. This is to show you how we started the class with hand and finger exercise to make wrists and fingers more flexible for haircutting work.

2) Obviously the blades of scissors is straight so that lots hair stylists think they can cut straight line. If that is the case, we’d like to know about it. So we use strips of newspapers and proceed to cut in fine strips.

.1.                            .2.

1)That is easy to simulate cutting top of the hair constantly!

2) Why is it then it gives trouble cutting the newspaper the same way, straight and evenly parallel to previous cut?

.1. .2.

1) How about the side of head looking down. Could I be able to cut on eye level?

2) Yes, I did except line was constantly cut in slanted angle! Why?

.1. .2.

.                                       .

Why? The reason. You look at these photos and you notice everyone’s right wrist is straoght forward to grab the scissors.

To do it right, you need to hold the scissors by bending the wrist moving away from your body. This will align the scissor blades parallel to your body. (She is left handed.)

These photo will explain the left arm placement and the foot position for cutting the top section.
The first example is what most stylists do. (Wrong process!)

1) Standing behind the chair, feet is  parallel to the stand. Left Elbow is behind the cutting line.

2) When the hair is pulled out to cutting line, the chances are either the hair is pulled out toward you or your elbow is out of position and end up cutting on slanted angle even the hair is pulled straight up.

.1. .2.

.                                 .

Correct way:

1) Standing position: behind the chair  Foot position: 2 o’clock position. The left leg is under the chair and open stance.

2) To have a better view, I rolled up sleeve. If you leave too much space between the chair, move close to the chair so that your left elbow is parallel to the cutting line.

3) If you are cutting the top section front to back  in even length, your stance will stay in the same place. When you finish cutting the section, you will be standing straight.

4) Many clients or yourself try to check the top section of hair being cut, the hair is pulled straight out and your hand is parallel to the head. Your arm and elbow is front of the check line.

.1.                                   .2. .3.           .4.

Let’s see how are the students doing:

1) (She is left handed.) Her right hand will be forward to cutting position.

2) Foot position: 10 o’clock (remember she is left handed.). Because she is a tall person, she should put her right foot well under the chair and place her left foot should move back to open the stance, or to the left of chair.

3) Foot position: 2 o’clock position  His left shoulder is not quite pointing forward. His left elbow is back of the cutting line.

4) I told him that his left elbow needs to be align with cutting line.

.1.                          .2. .3.                   .4.

1) I helped her bringing her left arm more forward so that her left elbow is aligned with cutting line.

2) Now her feet is at 2 o’clock position and her left shoulder is pointing forward.

3) Foot position at 2 o’clock. Body position: Just top of her body forward, and her left arm and elbow behind the cutting line.

4) I touch the her left shoulder to show her the proper forward position of left shoulder.

5)Now she is in proper position. (Compare with the photos #3 to #5)

.1.                                                    .2.                                 .3.                             .4.                           .5.

.

1) She is a tall person. Foot position at 2 o’clock  She brings the hair up though her whole body didn’t move flush to the cutting wig. ( Compare with photo #5 above)

2) Her friend helps her so that her left shoulder is moved to forward position.

.1.                             .#5.                                  .2.

. .                           .

Standing behind the chair to pull the hair out side way:

Foot position: Left foot is Placed a half step forward from her left foot.

1) Foot position: For right handed person, left foot moves up a half step.

2)For the left handed person, right foot moves up a half step.

3) Though her left hand is behind the back of the head, the cut line will end up slanted because her body placement is parallel to the chair and her left arm is close to her body.

4)This is a good position. You can see the left foot is place a half step forward and the left arm is at the center of cutting wig.

5) For left handed person: The right shoulder is pointing forward and the left elbow seems to be placed at the center of the head. This should produce the right cut line.

.1.                        .2. .3. .4. .5.

.

This time again, I observe the students’ cutting posture:

1) Foot position at 2 o’clock. Doing good!

2) Foot position at 2 o’clock. Using the body motion. Good!

3) Uh, the left foot is not quite placed right. Please correct it!

.1. .2. .3.

This is the diagram that Timesha drew.

And she has followed her diagram and, has done a wonderful finish. She’s all in smile!

Charlene is attempting the haircut as in this photo.
