Los Angeles Seminar May 2 2010

Los Angeles Seminar  May 2  2010

We have three new students and some students who have been continuing taking class 2 to 3 months consecutively.

This is wonderful thing to know that some students have taken interests in importance of taking my classes. It gives me great pleasure in knowing that

Connie (seated third from right) has again brought her two friends Linda and Jennie.

On this seminar, we put more emphasis in practicing body movement, foot position, hand placement and movement before even cutting hair.

Let me demonstrate some of the lessons.

[Pulling the hair straight out from back of head]

For your easy viewing, the horizontal tapes are placed on the mirror to see my explanation. You could see how you ought move your body, hand and elbow by watching my hat, shoulder and my left elbow. You will notice everything moves on a constant level.

1) Foot position at 2 o’clock position,my body is at forward position.

2) Take the section of hair and pull out with entire body moving backward.

3) Please notice the left foot. If you used your whole body ( instead of just your arm), your left foot toes are lifted from the ground. (This is THE indication that your whole body moved on the same plane.)

1. 2. 3.

.

Pulling our side way:

1) Foot position: Left foot a half step forward, body position is behind the chair. Left hand is at cut position, parallel to head and fingers at vertical position.

2) Keep the same position and pull the hair outward. Look at my left arm and elbow, right shoulder, they are within my body and aligned with direction of hair being pulled out.

3) Hair is pulled out to the desired length ( to the guide line). Recheck what is happening to my hat, left arm and elbow, right shoulder, angle of my face. Compare by looking through the photo 1 to 3.

1. 2. 3.

Top section: Pull the hair straight up from the scalp.

1) Foot position at 2 o’clock position, standing behind the chair.

2) Left hand (fingers) is parallel to the top of head. Left shoulder is moved forward to place arm and elbow will be placed front of cutting line.

3) Keep this body, hand, and elbow position to cut the entire top section.

4) When you cut longer hair, this procedure applies though your fingers will travel longer distance.

1. 2. 3. 4.

How about cutting the side section?

1) If you are cutting the left side, You will be standing left front of cheer at 45 degrees out. Foot position is at 10 or 11 o’clock position. Left arm and hand will be front of the model wig.

2) Cutting the right side, you will be standing at right 45 degrees out behind of chair.

Foot is placed at 10 o’clock position. Left arm and elbow is behind the center of head and parallel to the head.

1. 2.

Now let’s check how the students are doing:

Jody is starting her 3rd consecutive months of seminar/training.

I expect her to pay closer attention to her body movement. I explain in detail again and hoping her grasp of mechanism gets on deeper level.

.

At the back section of head, pulling the hair straight out:

1) Look at the head position against the guiding tape. It’s not exactly parallel to the guide tape. Her left foot position is not exactly at 12 o’clock position.

2) Her left hand: Her finger angle is not perpendicular to the guiding tape. Top of finger is tilted inside.

3) As you notice her head position shift from low(1) to higher(3). See the elbow path on mirror, her elbow indicates that she’s pulling out the hair only with her arm, not with entire body.

1. 2. 3.

.         .              .

This time, let’s check the foot position only.

1) Her left foot is not at 12 o’clock as it should be. The body is at forward position but her leg is straight.

2) She does bring the hair towards her, but only with arm. You don’t see the body shift.

3) There’s the upper body movement but, it’s not from the leg. Her leg more or less is stationary. Because her left foot is at 1 o’clock position, it is understandable that she’s pulling out hair with slight off angle of hand.

1. 2. 3.

..                        ..                        .

I advised her to practice stimulating the body movement with proper positioning of elbow, arm, and fingers checking against the guiding tape on the mirror. I asked to do that repetitiously about 2 minutes.

After the practice, you can see the improvement:

1) Her left hand is well positioned, perpendicular to the head. Her body is at forward, preparatory position.

2) Look at her head. There’s no bopping movement. Instead, it is moving on the horizontal plane as indicated by the guiding tape. The same could be said about her fingers. If you check her foot position at the end of movement, pointing heavenward, indicating her body did indeed made a shift.

1. 2.

.                                    .

Let’s check her hand movement:

1) Her hand is parallel to the head and vertical.

2) Her hand moves on the same plane and her left elbow is not stretched. It stays close to her body from the beginning to the end.

1. 2’

.            .

Foot movement

1) Her foot position is not quite right yet, but she has learned to shift her weight to her left foot at the forward, preparatory position.

2) Now she is using her entire body, you could clearly see that her weight is shifting to her right foot as she simulates pulling the hair out from the head. Do you see her left toes are pointing heavenward ?

1. 2.

.               .

Let’s look at Timesha who is left handed. ( Beware that it is opposite from right handed person)

1) Her foot position at 2 o’clock, her body at the forward preparatory position.

2) Her left elbow is tucked in toward  center of her body.

3) With that positioning, she’s pulling the hair out,

4) With her entire body movement.

Timesha understands the mechanism of body movement quite well. She probably spends time in practicing. You could see her level of accuracy by checking against the guiding tape on the mirror.

1. 2. 3. 4.

.      ..        ..              .

How about her legs:

1) You notice both her legs are equally relaxed.

2) Take the hair with forward preparatory position. Here again, her legs are relaxed.

3) She is well prepared to pull out the hair. Her right toes are beginning to rise heavenward.

4) She has completed the ideal process of pulling the hair out. Her body movement in the process is well commended.

1.                              .2.                              .3.                                       .4.

.       ..     ..             ..

Tiffany:

She has taken a month off and came back for this seminar.

She watches other students and reciprocates the movement.

1) She still remembers about 2 o’clock position.

2) Ask her to pull out the hair. Though her elbow is tucked close to her body, her legs are not obliging.

3) Because her left leg is stiff, her upper body is inclined backward.

1. .2. 3.

.                 .        .   .

How is her hand movement?

1) Place her fingers to pulling position

2) Her arm position remains stays at the same position throughout the process though her left leg becomes stiff.

3) Because of her left leg stretched out, the cut line rises upward, even her left toes are lifted and pulling the hair with her body.

.1.                         .2.              .3.

.   .

Araceli is actually a makeo-up artist and just started to take interest in haircutting.

Therefore she doesn’t have any experience in haircutting. This is a blessing that she hasn’t acquired any bad habits yet. Whatever she is learning, her body assimilates quite well.

1) I have also asked her to watch how she’s doing by only watching at the mirror against the guiding tape and go through the movement: moving her body, forward preparatory position, her left elbow tucked in close to center of her body.

2) pulling out the hair, keeping the same position,

3) pulling out the hair with her whole body moving in unison.

4) Her left leg toes rising, and pulling the hair straight out.

1.                   .2. .3. .4.

Jim:

Do you see where his movement being different from others?

1) Foot position is similar to Jody, not being at 12 o’clock position and right foot is pointing at 3 o’clock. If you check against the guiding tape on the mirror, his elbow is away from his body to pull the hair. His body is not at the forward preparatory position, hasn’t shifted.

2) He pulls the hair straight out. Unfortunately, his body hardly moves. However, his head position stays the same through out the process. (see the photo 1~3)

.1.                        .2.               .3.

.           ..           .

Left hand movement:

1) His elbow is not close to his body, thus his left arm is stretched out.

2) Using only his arm to bring out the hair.

3) Though he’s bring out the hair only with  his arm, at least he did pull the hair straight out.

.1.                                                             .2.                                                   .3.

Correction:

1) Bring the left elbow close to the center of his body and  remain in this positon

2) His foot position at 2 o’clock position: making certain his left foot pointing at 12 and his right foot at 2.

.1.            .2.

Now putting in faster motion:

1) Body moves to forward preparatory position. Do not stretch the arm/

2) Start pulling out the hair. ( Look into the mirrored image)

3) While hair is being pulled out, his left foot toe is beginning to rise.

4) He has completed the process using his whole body.

His left toes is pointing heavenward. His right foot has remained at 3 o’clock position which makes it easier to pull out the hair side way not straight back.

Head position moves with assuredness throughout the process shown in photos 1~4.

.1. .2. .3. .4.

Left elbow movement

1) His left elbow remains close to his body. ( Check the mirrored images)

2) The position of fingers. Check against the tapes and the mirrored images.

3) Further he pulls out the hair.

4) Completed the process. ( See the process by watching the image in the mirror) His movement is along the tape guide line.

Because he utilizes his whole body, the movement is spacious and accurate.

.1.                                     .2.                                              .3.                                                   .4..

This is Stephanie who is Jim’s classmate at the beauty school.

She is the last person to do the analytical observation. I asked her to do the back of the head section. ( Keep in mind, this is her very first attempt.)

1) If the hair is pulled out side way, then she ought to be standing at the side position. Her arm is stretched out.

2) Though her left elbow is tucked at the center of her body, she is pulling out the hair utilizing only her arm.

Her fingers are not exactly perpendicular you see it her back of the hand, if cut this position cut will be rather slanted.

3) I am doing OK??

.1.                                                         .2.                                               .3.

I am explaining:

1) First of all, showing her to stand at 2 o’clock position.

2) After making certain elbow is tucked in, pull out the hair. Her body stays stationary!

1. 2・

Cindy wasn’t feeling well last week. She will refine the cut she did last week. ( Remember the Bob with concave angel in the middle?) Today’s session, she will be using the thinning shears to take off the length to change the ambience of the style.

1) Where she left off last week’s session.

2) added finished look of front section

3) Back section done  last week

4) Finished look at the back section done this week.

1. 2. 3. 4.

Connie

Over the week, she came up a new design, and this is it! Though it seems to be an easy haircut?!

She uses the stroke cut to adjust the volume of hair. Voila, finished!

Jody,

she will practice body movement and work on short haircut. Blow drying the finished cut.

Finally put some product for finishing touch and gives a proud smile!
