Los Angeles seminar August 2010

Workshop in Los Angeles

Los Angeles – August Seminar

It’s Summer time!

This is a time when many people are away, taking time to enjoy their vacation.   We are very happy to have those of you who made
a wise decision and taking this opportunity in furthering your skills.
The first week of my seminar, I would like for every student to understand my concepts  for a hair cut.
My emphasis is in three folds:s
1) Skill
Your hand, wrist, and fingers should be dexterous enough to make soft and smooth movements.
2) Concept
You have to understand how your body moves/functions when you are cutting hair.
This is an important tenet of precision haircutting.
3) Design
Diagram to understand the three-dimensional cutting plane;
to have a concrete cutting  help synchronize with intended hair design.

The first agenda is to do an exercise in improving the motions of the wrist.
Secondly, we will practice good  body movements, which is essential to good haircuts.
It consists of thrasic movements:
1) Pull the hair straight out from  side of  the head.
2) Pull the hair straight out from top of the head.
3) Pull the hair straight out from back of the head

Lastly, we look at the importance of feet positioning.

There are two basic positions.

1) You put a half step forward from the other foot.

2) You put a full step forward from the other foot.

At this time, I would like to see how you do it, keeping in mind the  3 essentials of body movement.

1)Pull the hair straight out from the head.

.#1…………………………….#2……………….#3

1)  Put your left foot a half step forward.

2)  As your body is moving toward the side, pull the hair straight out

of the side of the head.

3)  Note how the foot moved. It looks almost parallel, but left heel is tilted upwards.

.#4.

4)  The elbow is the same direction as the hair that is being pulled out.

Let’s see how she is doing the same movement.

Yolanda:

…………………#1……………………………#2.

1) Her standing positon is too far from the cutting head.

2) The foot position is close to 2 o’clock and bend.

…………………..#3………………………….#4.

3) Her left foot steps into 12 o’clock position, which is making her body twist. Therefore, her head is not aligned to her body axiom.

4) Notice that her left elbow is parallel to the cut line. However, her body gets twisted when she tries to see where she’s cutting. Therefore, she wasn’t able to cut a straight line.

Ha le:

……………………#1…………………………….#2.

1) Similar to Yolanda, her left foot moved up too much. Her body is not close enough to the cutting head.

2) Her left foot is at 2 o’clock position,  i should be at the open stance.

………………….. .#3.

3) Her left elbow is placed right. However, her body is twisted a bit, which makes it harder to cut the straight line parallel to the cutting surface.

James:

……………………….#1………………………………….#2.

1) There is too much space between his body and the cutting head.

2) His left foot is positoned inside of the open stance.

………………………#3.

3) His left elbow is not parallel to the cutting line, which loses the accuracy of cutting a straight line.

Sandy:

………………...#1………………………………….#2.

1) She positioned her body close to the cutting head, but her upper body is bent too forward.

2) Her feet are positioned too close together.

…………………..#3.

3) Her left elbow is placed correctly, but because her feet are too close, she will lose some of the mobility.

Brenda:

…………………..#1………………………………….#2.

1) Her body is too far from the cutting head. She compensates by shifting her upper body forward.

2) Although her foot positioning is good, she’s moving only the elbow. Therefore, her foot doesn’t lift.

…………………….#3.

3) Her left elbow is parallel to the cutting line.

Weeraya:

……………………#1……………………………………#2.

1) Keep in mind, she’s left-handed. So what you see is a reversed image. Her body is not tight enough to the cutting head.

2) Her foot position indicates one foot is a half step forward. You won’t detect with this picture, but her right heel goes up as she is pulling the hair out.

…………………..#3.

3) The right elbow is behind the cutting line. This makes for a tendency to cut at a tilted plane, rather than cutting parallel to the horizontal plane.

Below I have included a video for you to watch that demonstates how the hair is pulled out at a side section. (Video doesn’t have sound.)

This video clearly explains the difference of pulling out hair with only arms,  and using the whole body to execute the haircut.

Let’s look at the procedure with photographs, shall we?

A haircut is not done by amachine, and a straight line is not cut using a ruler. Despite of that, we could create a beautiful hair design by correctly connecting straight cutting lines.

In order to achieve the end result, we ought to fully utilize the body motion to consistently pull out the hair correctly. Of course this requires a certain amount of exercise/training.

As I have observed all of you cut hair, it is not difficult to cut hair but to cut hair with precision is another matter.
